Turning Townships into Towns Through Art: The Maboneng Township Arts Experience and the Rise of Community‑Paid Cultural Tourism

Turning Townships into Towns Through Art: Building a Home for Cinema and Culture

In the heart of Alexandra township, Shado Twala sits among homeowners and young artists, her voice resonating over the quiet excitement of the crowd. Around her, walls once bare now host vivid stories — portraits, textures, and colours drawn from daily life. The laughter of visitors mingles with the rhythm of street sounds, as the community gathers to explore a new kind of gallery — one that lives, breathes, and belongs to its people.

The Living Gallery in Motion

This is the essence of the Maboneng Township Arts Experience (MTAE) — a nonprofit arts hospitality platform that transforms township homes into living galleries and cultural experiences. Through the Arts & Tourism Events Program and the Township and Rural Destination Development Program, MTAE is reimagining what tourism means: not a look from the outside, but a shared space where local residents host global visitors, and art circulates income back into the community.

Background: From Walls to Whole Economies

MTAE’s story begins with a two-hour walk — when founder Siphiwe Ngwenya made his way to a formal gallery only to find a two-year waiting list. Instead of waiting, he returned home and created a different model entirely. Working with neighbours and artists, walls became gallery spaces, homes became cultural infrastructure, and the township emerged as an art destination. What began as annual exhibitions became daily exhibits — an ecosystem that now blends hospitality, heritage, and community economics.

Today, this vision extends beyond exhibitions. In Langa township in Cape Town, a vibrant community cinema brings people together through film, storytelling, and conversation. It is not just a viewing experience — it’s cultural participation. Visitors are welcomed into locally curated cinemas and living galleries, where every artist, guide, and homeowner earns from the encounter. Each frame, each word, each visitor — circulates income back into the local economy.

Creating a Home for Cinema and Cultural Pride

In Alexandra, the Women in Tourism and Arts Program continues to open doors for local creators to lead, host, and share their work. The Schools for Art and Tourism Development Program brings young minds into the process — learning not only art but hospitality, heritage, and entrepreneurship. Artists like Thabang Moleya and community voices like Kuki Mabusa and Solly Mabilu show, in vivid detail, how visual storytelling can shift how townships see themselves.

The goal is long-term: to turn townships into towns through the arts — spaces of comfort for visitors and pride for residents. MTAE doesn’t build temporary moments; it builds structures of dignity. This is premium with purpose — the price of a visit, workshop, or tour covers fair payment for homeowners, guides, caterers, and transport teams. It ensures that art creates livelihoods, not side projects.

Why It Matters

Townships and rural communities hold deep creative reserves — stories, crafts, films, performances — ready to be experienced authentically. By transforming homes into galleries, these places gain recognition as destinations of culture, not as sites of charity or struggle. Every program by MTAE reinforces a model of community ownership, where culture circulates locally, strengthening both confidence and economy.

Join the Movement

To sponsors, artists, government agencies, and visitors: this is an ongoing invitation to collaborate in building a dignified township arts economy. Every partnership helps maintain daily exhibitions, extend training for local youth, and host cultural events that keep income and inspiration circulating.
