This scene captures the essence of the Maboneng Township Arts Experience (MTAE) — a nonprofit arts hospitality platform transforming township homes into living galleries and cultural spaces. Founded by Siphiwe Ngwenya, MTAE began as a response to exclusion from formal art systems and grew into a daily, community-paid model of cultural tourism. Today, it continues to redefine how art, space, and economy work together across South Africa’s townships.

Arts & Tourism as Everyday Infrastructure

The Arts & Tourism Events Program within MTAE illustrates the heart of our work — positioning art not as an occasional event, but as daily cultural infrastructure. In Gugulethu and other communities, local homeowners open their doors, guides lead visitors through streets filled with heritage, and performers bring rhythm to the art-lined walls. What visitors see is not staged entertainment; it’s lived creativity. What they experience is not ‘the other side’ of the city, but the real architecture of cultural life.

Community-Paid, Premium by Design

MTAE’s model ensures that every rand circulates back into the community. Homeowners are paid for hosting. Local guides, chefs, shuttle operators, and performers earn for their expertise.
