ArtVenturous Travel Conference 2025 Ignites Community-Driven Tourism in Soweto
In October 2025, Soweto transformed into a vibrant, living classroom as it hosted the ArtVenturous Travel Conference — a bold reimagining of what a tourism conference can be. The two-day event, part of the Maboneng Township Arts Experience (MTAE) programme, blended culture, creativity, community and entrepreneurship to explore how local talent and heritage can drive sustainable tourism development in South Africa.
A Conference Unbound by Convention

Unlike traditional industry events held in hotels and convention halls, ArtVenturous turned Soweto itself into the venue. From October 20 to 21, participants walked the streets, visited artist studios, heritage sites, and community spaces, and engaged directly with local creators and entrepreneurs.
Delegates — including cultural leaders, tourism professionals, artists, youth innovators, policymakers and international visitors — took part in interactive discussions, creative workshops and guided site tours. These sessions focused on rethinking tourism through the lens of community ownership and participated design, rather than treating townships as passive attractions.
Keynote conversations and panel discussions explored how Soweto’s rich history, artistic dynamism and entrepreneurial spirit can be catalysts for economic growth and authentic travel experiences.
Culture in Motion: Live Experiences and Storytelling
On day two of the conference, Soweto’s everyday spaces came alive with live performance, art demonstrations, storytelling sessions and marketplace showcases. These informal yet powerful interactions allowed delegates to experience firsthand how culture and community creativity can transform ordinary environments into tourism assets.
Throughout the event, local artists, craftspersons and small business owners were central to the experience — not just subjects of study but active contributors shaping discussions about the future of travel.
A New Vision for Township Tourism
At its core, the ArtVenturous Travel Conference emphasised community-based tourism that centres local voices and values authenticity. Instead of imposing top-down models, the gathering championed tourism that is by and for the people who live and work in places like Soweto.
Siphiwe Ngwenya, Director of MTAE, captured this ethos when she said: “We’re not waiting for transformation; we’re building it ourselves, at community level, in real time.” Her words reflected the broader conference goal — to move from talking about inclusive tourism to making it real in everyday community life.
Lasting Impact and Future Possibilities

The conference drew both local and international attention, spotlighting Soweto’s role not just as a heritage destination but as a creative hub for tourism innovation. By showcasing how grassroots cultural initiatives can stimulate economic activity, ArtVenturous challenged conventional industry perspectives and encouraged a shift toward more equitable and community-centred travel models.
As global tourism continues to evolve, the Soweto experience offered a compelling example of how places once marginalised in travel narratives can lead the way in redefining what authentic and sustainable tourism looks like — rooted in creativity, collaboration, and community empowerment.
