The Journey
The Gateway at Praça Mauá (Meeting Point – MAR):
We gather outside the Museu de Arte do Rio (MAR) in the revitalized Praça Mauá. Here, where the historic port meets contemporary architecture, your guide will set the stage, contextualizing how this harbor town became the gateway to the African diaspora in South America.
Largo São Francisco da Prainha:
A vibrant, bohemian square framed by colorful colonial buildings. Once reached by the waters of the bay, it is now a bustling cultural hub dedicated to black resistance, local gastronomy, and the eternal spirit of Rio’s street life.
Tramas do Porto:
We weave through this creative collaborative space, witnessing how local Afro-Brazilian artisans, entrepreneurs, and visual artists are reclaiming the port’s narrative through contemporary fashion, art, and storytelling.
Pedra do Sal (The Cradle of Samba):
Stand on the sacred grounds where modern Brazilian culture was born. Historically a salt marketplace and a sanctuary for quilombolas (maroon communities), this monument carved into stone is the undisputed birthplace of Samba. You can practically hear the echoes of the ancestral drums and iconic acoustic sessions (rodas de samba) that still electrify these streets.
Casa Omolokum:
A deep dive into ancestral memory through gastronomy and spirituality. This cultural space honors Afro-Brazilian culinary traditions, showcasing how food served as a tool for survival, preservation, and celebration of the Orishas.
Jardim Suspenso do Valongo (Valongo Hanging Garden):
Designed in the 19th century as a classical European-style promenade, this hillside garden holds a complex history. It offers a quiet space for reflection and an elevated view of the historic port below.
Cais do Valongo (UNESCO World Heritage Site):
The emotional heart of the tour. This archaeological site preserves the stone stones of the old wharf where over a million enslaved Africans arrived. It is a powerful, sacred monument to human resilience and a vital space for global memory.
Ladeira do Livramento:
We conclude our circuit at the historic hillside where Machado de Assis, globally recognized as Brazil’s greatest literary genius, was born. Born to a poor Afro-descendant family, his journey from this ridge to the pinnacle of world literature is the ultimate testament to the brilliant brilliance nurtured in these neighborhoods.
