This tour will take you from the innovative node of the Maboneng Precinct to the creatively rich township of Alexandra. This Alexandra Township is the original name bearer of the word ‘Maboneng’ meaning a place of lights in seSotho, one of South Africa’s 11 official languages.

Alexandra received the name Maboneng after being dubbed ‘Dark City’, as the township had no lights back in the days. But this changed quickly as the lights came to roost in the 1st township in JHB. Thanks to the governments involvement in the phases of Alexandra Township’s development.

While both areas are known as Maboneng we can definitely agree that the art and history found in both places are what truly, make them shine bright!

Start the tour in the inner city of Johannesburg, exploring various graffiti walls painted by both local and international artists. The walk is a leisurely treat that will have your finger glued to your camera trigger. While the graffiti is normally seen as backdrop to the busy precinct, our tour takes a closer look at how the art is the heartbeat of the city.

Our guests will move onto Alexandra Township to visit the gallery homes of the Maboneng Township Arts Experience.

Local artists exhibit their artwork in various homes around the township. Meet the artists and homeowners and acquaint yourself with Alexandra Township. Our guests will be left mesmerised with the amount of culture and art that can be found in one of the oldest townships. Our day will end with a delicious home cooked meal in one of our gallery homes.

This tour is for the traveller that seeks bewildering treasures, history and culture that is conveyed honestly and with an alluring appeal.

The starting place for the tour is the Maboneng Precinct in Johannesburg. It is safe with ample parking and security. You can uber there or take your car to access our guide and shuttle. You will meet your guide at the entrance of the 12 decades hotel.

Our guide was a great guest. He has worked with local people to transform some of their homes into art galleries. An amazing idea and great execution. The artworks we say were beautiful, the tour was eye-opening and the guide was very helpful and friendly. I highly recommend this experience.
